Watercolor Landscape
When busy Holiday times are coming, sometimes we forget to breath in and breath out.
I wanted to paint this Peaceful Sunset Landscape painting with the calm waters and the pier and invite the viewers to cherish the moment of the quiet stillness of the Nature.

Branch Blossom Birds
After visiting Tyrus Wong exhibition, and getting inspired; I’ve started the lesson with introducing wet-on-wet technique. Students of ages from 5 to 65 learned how to paint skies with watercolors.

To my surprise, at the beginning, I got more adults than children coming to the class (the Open Studio event is build when anyone can come at any time and jump in painting with the teacher)..

Later on, we got kids, who surprised me again, they were not afraid to try painting both projects: Sky in Style of Tyrus Wong and a Fall Theme.
Everyone had fun.
I have not noticed how quickly the tree hours of the lesson passed. We probably got between 40 – 50 young and not-so-young students happily learning new techniques painting with watercolor .. and some of them even went home with the greeting card made by themselves

Being interested in different surfaces for my watercolors, I’ve decided to try Hot Pressed paper. I got a bunch of large sheets and started exploring why Some Like It Hot.
I thought it would be great to do a series of paintings about Sun Francisco Bay Area Flowers. Living in this beautiful area allowed me to collect tons of photo references.
These sunny flowers were growing in Lafayette. My sister and I drove through residential area once and discovered small field of sunflowers between the houses. What captured our attention is that the flowers were not turned to the Sun, they were lit from behind. We took bunch of pictures; and, I loved the one that my sister, Masha Batkova, had.
Needless to say I wanted to paint it :0)
In my painting, I wanted to show not only the light penetrating the petals, but also the warm yellow against cold blue and cool greens.

Last Saturday plein-air trip brought two absolutely different views of one Bay, in one day, which were just a few hours apart. First, took rough  300lb Arches paper to paint the morning. The sun was rising and the fog was lifting up uncover a gorgeous scene. When the first painting was done, I moved my head on the right and saw a peaceful sky with almost still waters (that what couple hours can do!); and, in the middle of all this beauty three Giants were standing at the dock. I grabbed my brush and made rather minimalistic seascape emphasizing the solid Nature and the industrial invention that came together in one.

Many artists from CWA painted that day; and, as many beautiful paintings came out of it:

Loose and Fast – 20 minutes Challenge

Canyon, mountain, rock, sky

Yesterday I was in the process of painting a lot of details on one of my Still Life paintings when I received an e-mail from my son. He is traveling for business to Colorado this week; he visited very interesting places and wanted to share great sightseeings. I was pretty tired from all that meticulous details of my other painting and I needed to loosen up. I took one of his pictures and challenged myself for 20 minutes. Result is here: Colorado Mountains.
