Watercolor Painting of Columbia River Gorge, State Of Washington. Artist – Irina Sztukowski
This painting of a beautiful view of Columbia River Gorge and far mountains of Oregon that you can see from the state of Washington shore I painted el plein-air style.

The weather was constantly changing as the Fall breeze was shaving the leaves from the trees and making wave-like movements on still green grass. The Sun was trying to get through the clouds. I called that sky a watercolor sky as the clouds formations were precisely what happens to watercolor when you put wet paint on a pre-wet paper. The sky practically “painted” itself.

Cheers from

Breath Of Spring Watercolor
Today, March 1st, and it is officially the first day of Spring in the country I was born.

I remembered it when I’ve received a photo from my East Coast relative showing his car completely covered with snow. Instantly, I wanted to paint something nice, fresh, and something that would give the hope reminding that the Spring is just around the corner.

I combined two techniques in this artwork: a realistic watercolor painting of Crocus Flower , which is pushing his beauty through the snow, with an abstract design at the edges.

Just like a warm breath on the frosted window, this flower is revealing its gentle petals to the world adding color to a cold Winter and celebrating a new coming season.

As always, more paintings with flowers are in my Floral Gallery

In the months of September and October I have been away from home for a good half of the month. A dozen of these days was in the forest, woods, mountains of Northern California. I took, so to speak, a business art-trips there while camping with my family. Each time we went to the forest, I would be taking a set of paint and brushes; and, I created all day long thinking of new designs and new illustrations. Our house-on-wheels is quite comfortable for me to paint. It has a large dining room and a table where I can create. I call it My Art Studio On Wheels.

Being in the woods and painting in my mobile art studio gave me a great idea to bring the Forest into the interior of a house, to deliver the Nature into a home of the art collectors.

And that how my Abstract Forest series has been started. So far, I created Fall Abstract Forest and Winter Frozen Forest. But there are two more seasons and many other forest designs are ahead.

I have even posted a black and white illustration on my website, which is created in a special, PNG, format and allows the customers to play with the colors of the background. They can choose all available colors and just watch how the forest obtains a different feeling to it:

After saying a nice Farewell to the Summer, I thought it will be appropriate to greet the new season and welcome Fall.

In this abstract design I “quilted” in a hundred squares from the dozens of my Autumn theme watercolor paintings.

I can imagine how these squares might bring the light into the interior filling a room with the cold air, yet flaming warm colors; and, celebrating this gorgeous festive season:

Made In USA – and – California Grown

apples man dogs
My latest large painting is complete.
I picked such name, Made In USA, as I remember my husband joking: If I ever get a tattoo, it shell be “Made In USA”.. I find  it very patriotic indeed :0)..

So, I picked the subjects for my painting:
All Are Made In USA.

First, I painted the dogs: Fred and George – Made In USA
realism in watercolor
Then I moved to painting apples, one by one: proudly grown in our garden, by ourselves..and… Made In USA
realism in watercolor
Then I took Hookers Green and Grass Green paint by Daniel Smith Co (made in USA) and painted flowers, foliage, and grass:

And the final, Golden Centerpiece of this painting is my husband, who is also “Made In USA”, in fact, in a beautiful Golden State of California.
He is proudly washing apples. And, by the way, those apples were sweet, sweet!! :0)
Apple Harvest realism In watercolor
It certainly takes a long time to grow apples. It took me more than a season to finish this artwork.

George and Fred cannot believe they were so small one day!

Illustrating A Book Workshop In Danville California

Last week I shared my painting knowledge with the members of the Book Club at Danville library. Young readers, grade 4 and 5, met to read a book Planting The Trees Of Kenya: The Story Of Wangari Maathai by Claire A. Nivola. It delivers a true story about a winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Wangari Maathai who returned to her home country of Kenya and helped to save the farmland by planting the trees.

I was presenting a workshop: How To “Plant” The Trees On The Paper. For my lesson, I have chosen several techniques to show to the kids.

First we did a background in wet-on-wet technique and later on (when paper was bone-dry) we planted a Whimsical Tree, full of happy branches, swirls, and birds.

As you see, each tree was telling its own story:

Children also learned how to paint Fall trees using dabbing technique and even a sponge.
In one short session we probably “planted” one hundred of those trees. The Fall landscapes filled the room with the bright colors. I swear, if we didn’t have so much fun that day, we could even hear our painted birds signing on the branches of those trees ;0)

And even though, not all the trees in Danville, California, were yellow, orange and red yet; our trees, on the paper, were surely indicating a beautiful Fall season in its full glory!

Something Expanded And Something Shrunk – Welcoming Fall In My Studio

Impressionism in Watercolor
Just before a busy weekend I wanted to loosen-up and paint something pretty large, bright, fast and pretty.. I took as the suggestion my mini-artwork of the Fall Landscape (see the previous post HERE
And instead of 1″x1.5″ I made a painting 18″x24″
So the expansion was something like that:
A small forest grew into a large one in the matter of minutes.

Meantime, I had quite meticulous work coming-up this weekend; and, many more hours to paint.

My friend artist and I met in my studio for a painting session. I’ve set up a few still life objects and we grabbed the brushes. All of a sudden, with us two, with at least three still life sets and two puppies on the floor my studio SHRUNK!!!
And for the next 10 hours on Saturday, and good 5 hours on Sunday, we had to watch where to step in order not to crash into something or somebody.
But it was fun! Though the time flew by too quickly.

My friend Vera completed her beautiful still life in acrylic:
9″x12″ Still Life by Vera Lysenko

I started a larger still life, and will need to work on it for at least 10 more hours.
So far the fragment is done:
Realism in Watercolor by Irina Sztukowski
Stay tuned, the whole thing is coming soon :0)

Then my imagination ran wild and I even made Kitchen Towels and Christmas Plates (using Zazzle.com service):

I jumped into a pile of raked Fallen Leaves. They flew up to the air covering the Sun for a moment. A sweet, musky smell mixed up with the fresh cold air. The colors were Burgundy, Gold Yellow, and Sap Green. And I was a few decades younger…
These childhood memories were brought by the painting Autumn Dance when I loosen myself up letting the paint dictate a composition; and, the wet watercolors to imply where I should paint the leaves.
