Realism in Watercolor

This rose was another commission painting for the Notebooks collection. I loved to paint the dew drops as it’s been a while since I did them. The challenge was to melt them into the painting in order that the eye will see the beauty of the rose fist and the little drops a moment later.

A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose

a single rose, collage, love, myrtle wood, Painting, realism, rose, rose painting, symbol, symbol of love, Watercolor

The idea to paint a single rose started more than a decade ago when I saw gorgeous Rose Garden in San Francisco Golden Gate Park.
Roses their are amazing!
Each of them has its own color and texture character.
That single Rose above is “dancing” , her “skirt” is swirling with the motion.

The morning rose lit by a gentle sun has somewhat silky transparency that caught my attention:

And wherever I went I saw the beauty of a single rose, even if it is just a bud, young and pink:

The dew drops on this single rose here suggest a fresh lovely morning:

When speaking of a rose , it is said that these gorgeous flowers have a special meaning. And not only the color of the rose in this case should be considered. The number is also playing an important role in the symbolic message that one person want to convey.
A single rose of any color in full bloom means
LOVE
a simple message
I LOVE YOU
It depicts supreme devotion from one person to another, as if it is said in a gesture of giving a single rose:
All my sincere affections are concentrated in you,
ONLY YOU!

All presented designs in this post are created from my watercolor paintings of a single rose. The virtual frame is “build-up” from painting of a Myrtle Wood surface. I thought the texture of this wood will be perfect to “frame” my single roses creations.
This wood is amazingly strong, it only grows in certain area’s on our planet and it has unique structure, almost metallic shine if to look closely.
The cooler color designs looked almost like marble:

All these and many more collages of my watercolor single roses will be posted in a Decor Gallery very soon.

A Birthday Rose

art that sells, bestseller, bestselling artist, flower, pink rose, rose painting, Still Life, Uncategorized, Watercolor, watercolor by Irina, watercolours
This is my Birthday Weekend and I gave myself a little gift of getting on my blog and writing a short post. And of course the flower is the best object for that kind of occasion, isn’t it.

This semester in school has been tough: managing equivalent of 17 units and working part time was a good challenge yet did not stop me to paint. This simple still-life has almost no background, which allows for the Rose “to speak”. The light from the left illuminated the petals making the Pink of the Rose more interesting and diverse. The dark Green of the leaves helps to the Red to pop and brings the flower top towards the front of the painting.

Needed Some Colors

red rose, rose painting, roses, still life painting, yellow rose
After a Black & White commission that I am going to post after tomorrow I needed some really bright splashes of colors. And I needed to make it loose. No details! No background! Attention is on the subject matter. The vase is my favorite. It looks so great together with yellow and red of roses. And I’ve used absolutely unusual paper for watercolor this time. My son finished his drawing class and brought left over (pretty much not used) pad of Series 400 Stathmore Bristol.. Quite interesting experience to paint on it: makes you think about Impressionists and their fast techniques. Next time I’ll try very wet-on-wet using this paper. It is exciting to try different materials.

Love, Light, Lemon!

Dutch Still Life, lemon painting, rose painting, still life painting

Lately wherever I go and whatever I do the Dutch Still Life is following my art journey. Two weeks ago we started studying Dutch Art in my Art History class. Week ago I went to the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco to see Dutch private collection. And last week my husband and I were traveling to Washington, DC and happen to come to the Smithsonian Art Museum; and, guess what, we crashed into a Dutch Still Life there, surprise! I can look at the still lives painted by old masters forever and ever and never get tired of them. The professionalism, the symbolism, the details! Incredible!

The still life that you see in this post has it’s story as are all paintings (usually). The coffee pot was brought by my extended family Great Grandpa from Poland when immigrating to America in the beginning of 20th Century. The G-Grandpa is long time gone; but the coffee pot is in our family. One day I was sitting in my studio and winter sun hit the old table with the cup of coffee on it. The light was so sudden and so inspiring that I’ve grabbed what we had in the kitchen and dining room and started setting up a still life before the sun beam disappears. Lemon, Rose and Grandpa’s coffee pot won the prize.

The dark background reminds me Dutch Still Life style. I didn’t think about symbols when setting it up, we can just have a brainstorm and come up with many. I named this still life painting Love, Light, Lemon! as it seemed to be very poetic and implies some kind of song.
