Realism In Watercolor
After finishing one unusual commission (I am going to post the details just in a few days), I have received a good news from Evergreen, CO art gallery. Two of my paintings, The Dancing Shoes and In The Bookstore, were accepted into a juried art show “Watermedia: Exploration”.
Now it is time to frame, pack, and mail. I am realizing that it takes a lot of time to do so; besides, the jury was so impressed with my artworks that they offered to select a few more (of my choice) to send for the display in the matted (not framed) format. Yey!
Oh, it is hard to choose. And even though I don’t have too many originals left, I finally made my decision. The selected work will represent a floral theme.

Two were matted with the open edges of the watercolor paper. They have white background and represent botanical studies.

Now it is time for me to select, frame, and mat the others. My studio is an Artful Mess today.

Paintnig Red Poppies and Apples – Walt Disney Family Museum

Botanical Art
The weekend at the Walt Disney Family Museum went great.
While painting Apples and waiting for the Stage #4 to dry, I offered to show students how to paint a simple poppy flower with wet-on-wet technique.

I had a few flowers pinned on a board for a better visual experience and my original painting Poppies Field:
Presidio Museum San Francisco
It was interesting to see how much fun the students (from age 4 to  60+) had watching the paint intermingle while creating a new unpredictable pattern.

Also, my sister, like a true “paparazzi”, caught me thinking about a new project :0)
(I guess I was counting how many poppies to place on the blank paper):

Maybe because it is Fall came unexpectedly or I have re-read the Wizard Of Oz  when preparing for my Workshop illustrate-a-book; but I was thinking of poppies a lot, and as an artist I could put my imagination on the paper. The poppies in above painting are so light so red against the greed background. They  almost floating in the air.
The poppy field below is more solid. The whole field is flooded by poppies; and, we barely see the green of the grass between the red flowers. These poppies are competing with the blue of the sky and the yellow of the grass on the background:

And of course I couldn’t omit California Poppies by all means. These cute orange heads are so attractive and Sunny. The poppies became official state flowers of California, and I believe that the Golden State couldn’t choose the better flower than a Gold Poppy for its symbol:

Participating Artists Artworks
Yesterday I participated in Plein Air painting with my colleges from CWA (California Watercolor Association). We found an absolutely amazing place, Blake Garden in Berkeley, where every inch is asking to be painted: the trees, the pond, San Francisco Bay view, Berkeley hills, and stunning flower garden. I decided to paint an entry into the Flower Garden as the shadows and morning light were just right for a cozy painting. The hours passed by so quickly that I have not noticed it was time for a final critique. All artists chose their favorite places to paint and the artworks were absolutely beautiful.
