Painting half orange
Watercolor Painting of Cut Orange by the artist Irina Sztukowski

 Original was SOLD
Prints are available HERE

When I painted these oranges my biggest challenge was those little veins and the highlights on the cut. The main idea was to make everything without a drop of white paint; just by leaving white of the paper.
My favorite part was the orange flower in the corner. I really wanted it to glow and give a good contrast to the orange color.

I am blessed by amount of commissioned artworks that I had to paint for this project.
Delicious and healthy wooden bowls of steamed veggies and different grains and beans are speaking for themselves.
Above artwork is of Lentil Bowl with bell peppers, carrots, and zucchini pieces, all painted in watercolor in realistic technique.

I love painting food. It is my new diet so to speak: instead of eating, I am painting. Okay, I am eating it too 🙂

Here is another tasty addition to my art collection of watercolor food illustrations portfolio. Such popular these days Quinoa grains with snow peas, eggplant, bell peppers, and garbanzo beans:

Delicious Still Life Paintings – Decorative and Classic

Caramel, chocolate, editorial illustrations, hazelnuts, packaging designs, Painting, peach, pear, plum, realism, realistic, Still Life, Watercolor, watercolour
Here are some fruits of my labor. For the last month or so I was working on watercolor paintings for one European company. The original illustrations will be used for new line of yogurt products. When the products are on the shelves of the stores, I will definitely share the photos.

But this post presents some new decorative artworks with those delicious fruits and more. I was fortunate to have an opportunity to paint also sweets this time. The still life with Chocolate and Caramel shows two of my guilty pleasures in one artwork.

Also my recent paintings include Pear Still Life, Still Life With Plums, and Hazelnut watercolor artwork:

The still life paintings above are created in decorative manner. The background is more semi-realistic and these paintings are unified with one particular stile, where I mixed up the realistic approach with “washed off” background.

Versus, for example,  collection of my classical still life paintings, where you can see that each detail of the background is organically fits into a Classic Old Masters approach:

Strawberry Serendipity – Realistic Watercolor Painting

I was going down the Pacific Ocean coast from a nice mini-vacation with my husband. We stopped at the farmers market to get some vegetables and at the very end decided to get some delicious strawberries:
When I got home I received a new project request from my client, Swiss company, to paint strawberries in realistic manner for one of their client who produces yogurts in Europe.

The timing could not be more right. Miss Serendipity worked quite well. I grabbed my watercolors and brush and started working on this interesting project.
Painting realistic strawberries takes patients and lots of time. The artist needs to carefully research the object, plan the color theme, make very detailed drawing, and still keep the whole picture in mind when painting in small sections one after another.

I enjoyed it very much!

And the reward?!! Besides customer satisfaction, I got a nice desert at the end: organic yogurt with homemade honey and … strawberries!!! 🙂
These realistic paintings of watercolor strawberries (Full Realistic Watercolor Strawberry and Cut In Half Strawberry Watercolor Painting) are now available through my online gallery

Ginger Bread Anise Star Coriander Clover painting
This is the painting that became an inspiration for the last Yogurt Flavor for the International client:

Now it is the time to reveal the country where my illustration will be traveling.

The customer is in Switzerland, and I had worked with amazing designers from Allink Company on this project. I am very grateful to them that they found me and introduced to their Yogurt producing company. I do not reveal the end-customer name until the yogurt go to the production. It is really amazing how my watercolors can travel the World at a faster speed than I can do 🙂

In this semi realistic and impressionistic still life painting I wanted to point out the contrast of the light and dark. The sun rays are moving from the window directly to the rose bouquet penetrating the rose petals and leaving a bunch of whimsical shadows and reflections on the antique table.

Old Masters Realism Style
Above is completed still life with Sunflowers, lemons, and
apples. I painted this still life following certain rules of composition,
playing with colors and shapes.

Old Masters paintings, and in particular still life, always
fascinated me. The details, techniques, the composition and perspective usually
show a great deal of skill and many years of hard work learning and practicing.

I also fell in love with the fact that at the first glance
simple objects placed on the canvas or paper get their own meaning, telling their
own story, sometimes leaving the viewer wonder and imagine.
For example, in seventeenths century Dutch still life the
Sunflowers were symbolizing faithfulness, divine love, and devotion.
Fruits, let’s say a peeled lemon, were like life, attractive to look at, but
bitter to taste. Apples, especially with a bite, would return us to a
biblical story. Knife might suggest a transience of human life; but, together
with some seafood, it would change the meaning towards the reproducing implication.
And so on and on.

I placed the flowers and fruits not only because they are so
pretty; but, also to show a combination of different colors, the gifts from
Fall. My knife in the composition plays an important role as a transformation pointer. It connects one part of the still life (the one with apples and
bottle) to a part with Sunflowers. I suggested that I cut the lemon with this
knife before placing it on the plate.
Meantime the objects that are holding the fruits and flowers,
each of them have a great history themselves:

– Metal vase with Sunflowers was an inheritance of my
husband’s grandparents
– Elongated plate for cut lemon was given to me by my
friend. It is a part of 1921 Bavarian set.
– The cutting board is made of salvaged 1800 century wood
– The ceramic bowl with apples is also special. I made it
from clay 4 years ago.

It is interesting how simple objects of a still life
painting can tell a lot; yet, just sitting there in the painting and looking
pretty!

Shasta Mountain County

Shasta County Landscape painting realism in watercolor

Two lovely country scenes were waiting for me when last week long trip get-away brought us to Mountain Shasta county, which is five hours drive north from San Francisco Bay Area.

We were camping in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the fields and mountains.. Not a sound of civilization, no Internet, not even a cell phone coverage. This truly made me think about serenity and peace..

I was painting both artworks in plein-air style, sitting under the warm California Sun. The light breeze was helping to dry my paints that I could move on and on. And only mooing of the cows and birds tweets accompanied me while I was creating.
I hope the peace and serenity are shown in my works; as, usually, the artist’s feeling influences the paintings

Still life garden fruit
Introducing a Garden Apple, the one that didn’t come from the grocery store!

I love freshly picked apples for their gentle highlights, for almost fuzzy glowing from inside skin. Unlike the store-bought apples with the layer of wax and days on the shelf, the garden fruits seem to be more happy..

This apple surely was a happy camper. The leaves on the branch were like spreading hands..and the fruit was smiling:
“Eat me! Oh, no, wait, paint me first!”

My two cute puppies are playing: Fred (the Blondy) was almost a year old, and George (the Red Head) was just a couple or three months.

This is a fragment of a large painting that is still in progress. I just wanted to share those two brothers’ conversation. George was always picking on Fred; but, he was also learning…

I wonder what kind of lesson he is receiving here?
Dog knows!

And speaking of learning, in my Figure Drawing class we are working on a lot of bones and body parts.

Here are just a few of them:
