What is an artist’s inspiration?

Per Oxford dictionary Inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.

It could be a light or a spark of a creative fire that can easily slip away..

For me an inspiration is definitely a process, a welcomed thought that manifests into some wonderful things. It is constant development, shaping the idea, meeting and overcoming the obstacles. And in order to achieve a final outcome, a completed artwork, the inspiration needs to be nurtured as if it was a living organism, a breathing creature.

I painted this semi-realistic artwork picturing the artist just at the beginning of his creation. The thought, the idea, the inspiration are already there. There are some questions, some answers. The petals of the creative process are blooming and surrounding the artist gently nourishing his fragile, invisible, and sometimes vague strings of thoughts. He just touched the paper with the first brush stroke. His heart is beating with excitement yet there is might be a doubt. But light of the inspiration will help him to conquer any fears; and, the flower of his creative process will blossom into a beautiful piece of art.

And now, I am going to reveal the mystery of my inspiration for this painting. The artist painted here is only 21 years old; he has many paintings ahead of him. He has two small daughters one of them was just born and another one is almost two years old. Both of them will become artists one day. They will absorb his dreams, follow their father’s inspiration, and create their own.

It is almost half century passed since that day when he just touched the brush; but, the inspiration is still here for many years to come.

Made In USA – and – California Grown

apples man dogs
My latest large painting is complete.
I picked such name, Made In USA, as I remember my husband joking: If I ever get a tattoo, it shell be “Made In USA”.. I find  it very patriotic indeed :0)..

So, I picked the subjects for my painting:
All Are Made In USA.

First, I painted the dogs: Fred and George – Made In USA
realism in watercolor
Then I moved to painting apples, one by one: proudly grown in our garden, by ourselves..and… Made In USA
realism in watercolor
Then I took Hookers Green and Grass Green paint by Daniel Smith Co (made in USA) and painted flowers, foliage, and grass:
foliage green art
And the final, Golden Centerpiece of this painting is my husband, who is also “Made In USA”, in fact, in a beautiful Golden State of California.
He is proudly washing apples. And, by the way, those apples were sweet, sweet!! :0)
Apple Harvest realism In watercolor
It certainly takes a long time to grow apples. It took me more than a season to finish this artwork.

George and Fred cannot believe they were so small one day!

Drawing Faces, and Beyond

In the last several month I had an opportunity to draw many portraits with models and from the photograph.
Above is the portrait of my niece when she was just about 10. She is holding her beloved pet here, wrapping him in her arms like a cozy blanket.

All other portraits were from studio time. It was fun to draw live; it requires sense of measurement, value study, and understanding an anatomy of the face.

The last one below is the skull of the man above. Oh, no, the man was alive, thank God! I just had to imagine what skull he has by placing a tracing paper on a drawing above and tracing imaginary bones there:

Watercolor Cat

Oh, not me.. she “Didn’t Do It”.. I did paint her.. :0)
My customers provided the photos of their friend’s cat and asked me to paint her.
They will make a gift and surprise their friend.
This cat is a precious part of their friend’s life.

Meet Anna: a 14-year old fuzz-ball.

When I saw the pictures I wanted to add some color to her life, not just a gray pavement. And I wanted to place some story into my painting. The cat looked to me young even though I knew her age. So, I thought that some kid-ish thing will be well appropriate for her.
And here it goes: SHE DIDN’T DO IT ;0)

I am in the process of preparing a Family Calendar for 92 year old Grandma and this little goof-boy is her great grandson. The photo was so hilarious with his silly face, closed laughing eyes and in these cute cowboy boots and a hat, which are just so well fit as the Cool Dude’s should. I couldn’t resist and chose the photo for my painting.

My friend shared a few of her granddaughter’s recent pictures in case I choose some of them to paint. When I looked at this one, I couldn’t stop thinking how great it would be on a painting or on the card. The toddler’s hands movement, the smile, the red hat, all of this was just calling for a great vacation theme, isn’t it :0). I can’t say the name of the girl due to a privacy (Thank God the glasses protect her identity 😉 too)  ; but I can tell you her name shines like morning Sun.

Trip to Monterey or Not?

adoption, African, family portrait, kids portraits, Monterey, portrait, Uncategorized
22″x17″ Pastel on Tinted 80lb Paper
………………………………………………….
This was my Final Project and my Final Pastel Painting.
The smiley model of this painting is an adorable boy from Africa who was adopted by  one great San Francisco family. His nature is just like a Sunshine. In fact, if to translate his name to English it would read something like that. The family is getting this portrait as a gift from the Artist.
I’ve used several techniques when working on this art piece. For the face, I put layer after layer with smudging technique, yet the eyes I’ve drawn with the point of a pastel stick in the sharp crisp strokes. For the fuzzy fleece jacket I placed my pastel stick horizontally on the paper and moved different directions to allow the texture of the paper to shine through. When I took the original picture it was not that colorful at all. The background was a concrete pavement with a few pigeons on a back. I decided to combine two in one. I got one of the photo references that I had from my trip to Monterey and made the little boy “travel” to that beautiful place.
And now when my semester is over, I need to get inspired to paint as bring as pastels with my lovely watercolors. The “models” didn’t wait too long. The day started bright; and my fresh-picked garden roses posed for me if they were asking to paint them in the future:
