Watercolor Cover Journal – Evening In Paris

I have designed a new Journal for people who believe that a written note is a powerful tool in gaining peace of mind and confidence. There are 160 pages. The pages are lined and have intricate ink design that I first painted by hand and then applied to every page using publishing tools.
I’ve selected one of my favorite watercolor paintings: Evening In Paris for a cover of this journal. Two girls walking towards the Eiffel Tower symbolize a friendship and traveling: two things that I cherish and adore (not mentioning the dogs of course ;)…

Eiffel Tower – Sunny Day In Paris

travel sketch of Paris France
I have painted Eiffel Tower many many times. It is easy to prove this statement just by showing my France Gallery , which has more than five dozens paintings and design with Eiffel Tower and streets of Paris by now.
But this time it was a special treat for me to paint the famous Eiffel Tower in person, as French say tete-a-tete (e.g. in person) and in el plein-air style (as the same French say) practically meaning that I was sitting there and painting Eiffel Tower from that particular spot.
Last month I was traveling to three wonderful countries for inspirational business trip. France was one of them.
Lucky for me the day I was painting was more like a Summer day as if Paris greeted me with a beautiful sunlight and gorgeous shadows well suitable for a nice watercolor painting.
I was surprised to find a street that led to Eiffel Tower, but no tourists were there. Only block of the buildings was separating me with the crowd gathering around and under the tower, and here I am in almost solitude making a first drawing in this beautiful city of Paris breathing in a summer like spring day enjoying every moment.
It was wonderful experience!
Truly artistic one, when you don’t notice nor occasional person passing by, no time flying. I’ve only noticed that couple of hours evaporated quickly by looking at the shadows that changed drastically. Good thing I took an initial photograph of the place and was able to finish the paining in the hotel room, in my mini-art-studio that I improvised right there.

Even though I brought my travel palette with me on the trip; I couldn’t resist the temptation when passing by an old Charvin Art Shop on Seine river embankment. This company produces watercolor handmade paints since 1830. Just to think that famous impressionists were painting Eiffel Tower and Paris streets with watercolor of this company, created a strong desire for me to get one of travel boxes with French watercolors. That was the best souvenir I could bring from France: a handmade watercolors in the box, and painted with these watercolors Eiffel Tower, the Eiffel Tower that fit my suitcase!! 🙂

When Paris Comes To San Francisco

This new painting accompanied with five others, is now on Geary Blvd in San Francisco.
Recently opened Cafe Coco  invited me to show my large artworks there:

I don’t think I’d ever be tired of painting the Eiffel Tower. Each time I do it, I find new intricate nuances. This time I made The Tower almost weightless, floating in the orange purple dramatic skies of Paris.

No need to explain my love to Paris and traveling to Europe. OK, to a traveling in general. I love it! First time I’ve visited Paris in 1995. That time I lived in Saint Petersburg, Russia; and, a week in Paris was beyond my dreams. A travel company I worked for offered a super cheap deal (though for me it still was 4 times of my salary) and I took off. Next time I went their seven years later. My friend and I celebrated my 38th Birthday.. One evening we were heading to our hotel. It just stopped raining and setting Sun hit the loud streets with the last beams of that day. I lifted my head and all of a sudden saw that Eiffel Tower disappeared. Only top of the construction was clearly visible. Thank God I had my camera with me.
In this painting of Paris street I wanted to portray that feeling I had when I saw the Eiffel Tower in the sun light. Maybe it is not traditional view as all posters in the world would want to picture Eiffel Tower in full its glory. Oh well, I saw it floating in the air.
The girl on the front is just a random Paris visitor. She is rushing home and doesn’t even know what’s happening behind. I gave her my hairstyle and dressed in my coat and a scarf. I also wanted to put some story into my painting of Paris as I think this city (no matter what they might say) is romantic. Here is my story:
“It was nice fresh evening in Paris. Only second day and She was already in love with the City. Heading home that night and dreaming of quiet dinner she heard a loud boom. The motorcycle broke the murmur of Rue Saint Dominique and made Her turn the head toward the noise. He takes his helmet of and looks in her direction. Her face is lit by the evening Sun and with astonishment of the beautiful Eiffel Tower disappearance…”
You feel the romance here, eh?! :0) .. finish the story yourself..
Okay, back to the Paris paintings. All what you see on it is only artist’s imagination, with exception only the Eiffel Tower, Paris, The Sun. Feel my love to that romantic city. I’ve even created a Gallery that called My Paris Mania where you can find  dozens of impressions from my Eiffel Tower and Paris paintings.
This morning the curiosity led me to find a website with 360 degree photos of Paris streets. I loved placing Full Screen feature and look around as I am there in Paris right now:
Happy Traveling!
And  I also found an interesting article posted by Fox News on Ten Things You’d Never Guess About Paris. It was an opinion of one writer who came to Paris from America and settled down there. Per his point of view, as an example:
– the less French you speak than better you are
– the French people appreciate American culture more than we think
– the French like tourists
– but French people in general sometimes don’t like Parisians (read why)
and much much more :0)

My Eiffel Tower is re-built. The last stroke is applied and the pink scarf is flowing in the evening Paris breeze. It was hard to stop painting; it’s like to tell an old friend Good Bye. But I am sure I will be back, to  The Eiffel Tower, to Paris, in person and in paintings.

When my customer framed the painting, she sent me a picture with it. The result exceeded the expectations. I love how the silver frame highlights the Greys of the painting bringing up the silver tone to the whole piece:

Eiffel Tower – Phase VII and VIII

commission, Eiffel, France, history, Irina, learn to paint, Paris, realism in watercolor, step-by-step projects, Sztukowski, The Eiffel Tower, Travel, Uncategorized, watercolor tutorial
It is all in details. One by one, beam by beam, I was building The Eiffel Tower observing the original structure and meantime retaining the artistic approach to the painting. I also started working on the figures, but had to keep in mind they are far away and should not be pronounced too much. Yet I grabbed the magnifying glass in order to paint the girls carefully.
Viva Eiffel! My Tower is almost completed :0). Tomorrow I am placing the final art with the link to the details.

Eiffel Tower – Phase V and VI

apricot blossom, art studio Irina, commission, Dramatic Sky, Eiffel Tower, Fine Art, first place, France, French, gift, Irina's art, Painting, Paris, Spring, Uncategorized, watercolor by Irina, yahoo groups
The stage V and VI of the painting look as if I was rebuilding The Eiffel Tower from the top gradually grounding the construction, isn’t it.. In the stage V, I started placing the details high above moving slowly to the bottom in order to give the weight and to see the contrast.
Stage VI is the most enjoyable as the tower starts looking almost completed; yet, still there is a lot of work to do. One would say, it is done, just work on the figures a little; but, I think I cared away with the lacy look of the Eiffel Tower. I caught myself while painting that I felt being in Paris that exact moment, physically! Great feeling, eh. And it’s not too expensive way to travel ;0)
And here is one more highlight from my artistic journey: the painting Apricot Blossoms won the First Place in May theme  SPRING in Yahoo Group.

Eiffel Tower – Phase III and IV

Dramatic Sky, Eiffel Tower, France, historical building, night, Paris, realism, step by step painting, Watercolor, watercolor Paris
These two Phases of building The Eiffel Tower are pretty much self-explanatory. The skies got more dramatic, the fist beam is painted on the tower. It still looks as a dream floating in the air, but nobody can say it is something other than The Eiffel Tower. A few brush strokes are enough to distinguish a silhouette. The figures are only drawn in pencil yet the negative space around helps us to recognize two young girls engaged in conversation.

Stay tuned: tomorrow will be more Eiffel Tower built on my blog :0)

Eiffel Tower – Phase I and II

art commission painting, art studio Irina, commission, Dramatic Sky, Eiffel Tower, Fine Art, France, French, gift, Irina, Paris, romantic, sketch, Sztukowski, Uncategorized, Watercolor
The drawing on the left and the first wash on the right.
When I drew the tower I started with the main shape going slowly into tiny details, yet did not want to place too many of them to avoid the pencil marks showing too much.
The fist wash was made wet-on-wet. I used Alizarin Crimson and warm yellow to give the sun reflection on the clouds. The Ultramarine blues with Violet Purple fit right in for the clouds shapes. Yet it was only the beginning. The clouds would need to be touched several times here to achieve the intensity of the night Paris sky.
At this stage of painting I was not concerned neither about Eiffel Tower construction details, no figures. The main focus was on area, which will help the Eiffel Tower to shine.

Detailed Image of the Original Painting: Here
My client asked if I could paint The Eiffel Tower for her (original art was recently sold) but instead of one lady she wanted to see two young girls. The painting would be a gift to her friend who she met in Paris. When start working on the new art piece, and having the original image handy, I wanted to make a new one as if it was the only painting I ever did of The Eiffel Tower. I’ve been to Paris twice; but unfortunately pictures didn’t turn out great (a good excuse to go there again, eh :0) ..
The day I’ve received the commission request the skies in my area were so beautiful and so dramatic that I rushed to take a good photo reference to have it for my future art:
Even though the girls’ figures on the painting were important they should not distract the attention from the main subject, The Eiffel Tower. Better, if they would be engaged in some kind of conversation, and maybe about the beauty of Paris and the Eiffel Tower itself.
I made a few figure sketches for my client to choose. I really wanted to leave the scarf on one of the girl to show not only the style, the breeze; but more, keeping it as the romantic Paris-like piece, which by flowing with the wind would bond two figures together. And, it should be the brightest spot of the figures. The figures were supposed to be painted pretty much in one color:
This sketch (above) was engaging but it was a little detached from the mail subject.
My client chose this sketch. It was not only showing a nice conversation, but as well the dynamics. One girl was pointing towards The Eiffel Tower as if they just discussed its grandiose beauty, which suddenly appeared from the cloudy skies.
Stay tuned. Tomorrow I am posting first two phases of the painting.
