Watercolor Painting of Tulips by the artist Irina Sztukowski

With Spring is just around the corner, I remembered about this old painting of mine. Tulips are such gentle flowers; and, the variety of colors and types is just amazing! I loved painting the tiny stripes on a white lit by a morning light petals.

Carmel Mission Basilica – Watercolor Painting On Canvas

Watercolor Painting on Canvas Carmel by The Sea mission
This watercolor artwork was painted on a special canvas, that is made for watercolors and acrylic paints. I painted it on one of my trips to Carmel By The Sea, a beautiful quiet town where this Spanish Mission was built.
The garden next to Basilica was full of flowers and the fountain was my focal point in this composition. Painting on the spot, el plein-air style, is not an easy task. The artist needs to be quick and spontaneous when painting rapidly changing weather. The morning sky cleared rather quickly that day; but, I am happy I was able to catch those fresh strikes of the clouds at the beginning, which gave this nice live look to the painting.

More beautiful landscapes are here:

Watercolor Landscape – State Of Washington Columbia River Gorge

Watercolor Painting of Columbia River Gorge, State Of Washington. Artist – Irina Sztukowski
This painting of a beautiful view of Columbia River Gorge and far mountains of Oregon that you can see from the state of Washington shore I painted el plein-air style.

The weather was constantly changing as the Fall breeze was shaving the leaves from the trees and making wave-like movements on still green grass. The Sun was trying to get through the clouds. I called that sky a watercolor sky as the clouds formations were precisely what happens to watercolor when you put wet paint on a pre-wet paper. The sky practically “painted” itself.¬†

Bestselling Art

travel painting sketch
It is a good time to mention bestselling art of the first quarter of this year. I will just mention here a few of them, that truly became best of the sellers from my art world collection of watercolor.
Above painting of Stockholm was purchased by an art collector, surprise, surprise, from Sweden. I am so happy that this painting print, which is already one of my bestsellers since 2010 now will decorate a house in Uddevalla, Sweden.

Another bestselling watercolor that I want to point out and I am not surprised that it was precisely in the fist quarter, the Water Lilies that I painted one day being inspired by Claude Monet .. And surprising enough, the museum Legion Of Honor was hosting the Monet exhibition this year. I loved visiting this exhibit with its bestselling art two times this year. And here are my Water Lilies bestseller, mine are painted with watercolor on a special watercolor canvas:

inspired Monet
These watercolor lilies traveled to Clayton, MO to decorate my art collector’s house.

The Art Collector from Californian town Torrance, decided to purchase White Oleander painting of mine in a beautiful gray frame. Here is this bestseller in all its beauty:

And I was not surprised that my bestselling Italian painting with ancient town of Siena, was purchased this quarter as ¬†well. By the way, the second quarter of this year I am planning to visit this town for business and will paint many more beautiful paintings of its churches, streets, flowers that most likely are keen to become bestsellers of the following year ūüôā . I love Italy, and even devoted a Gallery to this country, this gallery now has more than 100 paintings.
art for home decor
I am so happy that my travels help my art collectors bringing the art with beautiful places around the world into their home interior. As a good example this bestselling artwork with the view of Golden Gate Bridge through Lincoln Golf Park (the 17th Hole) which is so loved by my customers. This time  art collector from Fairfield, California purchased this art for the home decor:

Lincoln Park San Francisco by Irina Sztukowski
Another bestseller from my Travel Collection went to one International customer from Malta. This art collector was interested in a Russian Cathedral, the Blood Cathedral from Saint Petersburg (the city where are was born):

And needless to say, my bestselling art pieces were also printed not only on canvases, paper, metal prints, and framed artworks; but as well on different merchandise.
Such for example bestselling watercolor with dancing Ballerina was loved by the art collector from El Segundo, CA and purchased on a few blue pillows for living room decor:

Another International customer from Australia (Tarragindi, QLD) wanted to have my Baby Room bestseller on the cellphone cover. Ah, the ideas of the art on merchandise are truly endless, aren’t they!!¬†

What a great artful year I am having!!! I am so glad that so many art collectors (I’ve not even mentioned all due to the length of the article here) wanted to purchase my art from:

acrylic painting by Irina Sztukowski
Even though here in California, Spring is slowly moving into Summer, and many trees already dropped their blossoms while teeny tiny fruits are forming on their branches, I am still in awe with Spring Blossoms at their peak of the season.

This artwork of Cherry Blossoms is created with acrylic paint. I wanted to show how another of my favorite water medium works greatly revealing fine texture of the paint on paper:
purple artwork by Irina Sztukowski
And recently, looking at my artwork from the bird’s view point, I’ve noticed that purple is becoming one of my favorite color. I’ve created so many artworks with this hue that I felt that there is a need to collect them into a separate gallery.¬†
I called this Art Gallery –
It has paintings from abstract to realism with all shades of purple color from sweet gentle lilac to deep violets:

Purple artwork fit interior decor so organically. They bring great deal of light and air into a room interior:

Painting Plein Air

plein-air style
I will be never tired painting plein-air style as long as I am able to go outside and withstand surprises of the Nature. Painting outdoors has its own charm and challenges; yet, still it is very enjoyable and the artworks have a special feeling to them. You cannot wait for too long painting under the open. The weather changes constantly, especially if you are at the ocean shore, like example above. It is my recent painting of one of my favorite places on Earth, Monterey Pacific Ocean shore. I’ve painted there many times and each time it comes out differently. The painting of Monterey above is free, though I “blocked” it in the ink lines to give it illustration kind feeling, e.g. I’ve illustrated the scene in the fast brush strokes with watercolor first and then “locked” the picture by adding rigid lines to amplify¬†the stiffness of the rocks and power of the ocean.

Another plain air painting of Monterey shore is more impressionistic style as any of my outdoor paintings of Monterey:
Pacific Ocean shore impressionistic artwork

Here, I didn’t want to add the ink. The weather was so hot that it dried watercolor quite fast so the edges of each brush stroke were defined enough without any additions.

In comparison, the next plein-air painting of Monterey shore strives pretty much on energetic ink lines, the watercolors here are secondary. This free-style painting of Pacific Ocean shore is more a sketch than a complete painting, but it does have certain charm and spontaneity to it:

Pacific Ocean plein-air painting

Yes, each plein air painting tells a story of that specific day, but it also speaks for the mood of the artist. As an example, here is my recent plein-air landscape artwork of the calm sunny day from this week. The Spring is taking over, the grass is bright green, and many trees are opening their blossoms. A simple, yet informative landscape that illustrates a coming of a new season:

pond trees flowers Spring in California
My friend took panoramic¬†photo of the area where we were painting that day, and I got into the picture by chance or intentionally. I don’t know. But this photograph shows so well the power of a fresh air and the creating artist, The Observer, who, during the plein-air painting trip, merges with the Nature!

Small Town In The Mountains – Watercolor Pencils – Step By Step

Brentwood, California, landscape, lesson, Mountain Diablo, mountains, outside, plein air, sketch, sketching, step by step, step by step painting, town, watercolor pencils
watercolour pencils
I was recently visiting my friend artist in a small town of Brentwood that is hiding between the golf course and just behind a highest point of Bay Area, San Francisco, the famous Mountain Diablo. We went to paint en plain-air style, e.g. we grabbed our art materials and went painting outside.
The weather was beautiful. Everywhere I turned I’d seen a lovely subject for painting. I’ve chosen to paint a scene with a small town in the golf course hills with a huge mountain behind. My choice of the materials this time were watercolor pencils (I’ve previously wrote an article about watercolor pencils HERE ) .¬†

I’ve sketched the drawing with a simple pencil first, and then started applying my watercolor pencils. That was the part that was actually accomplished outside:
The trick with watercolor pencils is that you have to know what colors to mix and predict what outcome will be at the time you put ¬†water on the paper. I intentionally¬†was drawing with a limited pallet. Out of my 72 watercolor pencils that I have in the box, I’ve picked only 16 to go plein-air painting.
Here is the first stage of the drawing/future painting:
After, I got home the main work had begun.
I’ve added more pencils in depth, then highlighted the drawing with ink:
Then, I grabbed a softest Kolinsky Sable brush Number 11 and dipped it in a clear water. First areas that were “watered” were large ones, the sky and the grass below. Then I started adding some water to the smaller details such buildings and trees:
Right away I’ve noticed that in some areas the wash of water made the colors too bright, in others the colors were simply “washed” away. But the good part, that with watercolor pencils you can always reapply the colors with one important warning though: the paper should be bone dry before you add more colors.¬†

After several times of re-applying the pencils and rejuvenating them with water (clear water on the soft brush), the painting was completed and now it is ready to see the World!! ūüôā

Winter Landscape Into Interior

decor, Home Decor, interior, landscape, mountains, national park, pine, realism, Sequoia, snow, Sztukowski, trees, Watercolor, watercolour, Winter
I found a great solution for a Winter landscape by selecting this silver frame. Cool colors of the metallic polish fit so well all the cool hues of the snowy forest with its tall trees of the Sequoia National Park.

Later, I placed the framed painting into three different interiors. These interiors are very similar by their muted light colors.

The painting fit all three interiors quite well. It brought rather interesting highlights into each home decor:

Bestselling Watercolors. Analytical Research

Irina Sztukowski art
Continuing my research of the bestselling watercolor paintings, I want to focus this time on what was selling in May and June of this year. Surprising enough more than 70 percent of the painting that were sold from my website www.artirina.com were all about food! Fruits, berries, vegetables were the Kings and the Queens of the sales on my little watercolor Farmers Market those months. The quartet of the bestselling watercolor illustrations above is quite bright and informative. It pretty much has all what a good housewife might want to have on her kitchen walls to inspire the members of the family to eat right :).

On another hand, the single apples and pears group was liked by my Art Collector from Chandler, Arizona probably for its simplicity:

artist Irina Sztukowski
This painting quartet contains some of my bestsellers that were part of the Marmalade Labels project and Jam Labels project. The Red Apple painting was even featured once in People Magazine one day! No wonder the art collectors choice was given  to this watercolor bestselling combination.

A couple more edible bestselling paintings that I want to include here were as sweet as the first two above, yet they do have different feeling to them as the fruit and vegetables are so diverse here.  Even now these little bestsellers water my mouth just looking at them:

Farmers Market painting
One Art Collector didn’t want to buy whole bunch of Farmers Market watercolor produce and stopped his choice at just one Eggplant. but it does look so great on the plain white canvas! Thank you so much to a dear customer from Idaho Falls, ID !!¬†

But not only clear white background for the bestselling watercolor illustrations was popular that period. One of my best selling classical still life paintings, Onion Ginger And Lemon, went to the state of Idaho to an absolutely different customer the same month:

bestseller watercolor
There were just a few sales with flowers from my Floral Gallery that month. The rest of the bestsellers were quite romantic watercolor landscape paintings.
I guess the beginning of the Summer brought that kind of feeling and customers decided to get more romantic ūüôā

Besides one of my absolutely favorite landscapes with Italian small town of Positano (thanks to the Art Collector from Flamingham, Massachusetts for adding bestselling points to this popular watercolor) :

…the art collectors from Georgia and Colorado decided to purchase some beautiful landscapes to add to their home decor.
The spontaneous impresionistic bestseller with Carmel By The Sea watercolor paining:

And romantic bestselling watercolor (from different websites of mine) with the Bridge and Bicycle at the Marina:

The last but not least bestseller in my analytical research of the monthly sales is one of my most favorite and romantic ones that has Golden Gate Bridge on the background.
I called this bestselling watercolor Two Love Birds.
The art collector from Nesconset, state of New York chose classical black frame and white mat to garnish it:
