Watercolor Animals – Editorial Illustrations Types

Watercolour Artist Illustrator Mare and Foal at sunrise

What is exactly an editorial illustration? Historically, this kind of work came from vintage magazines and at the beginning was pretty much for advertising, for social and political satire, or funny cartoons. Nowadays, when the printed and online media expanded dramatically, editorial illustration as well extended way beyond the world of politics or simple cartoons. Online or paper newspapers and magazines post & print illustrations together with their articles to highlight a conceptual element to engage their readers.

In my example above, the editorial illustration of two horses, mare and foal, can represent an article in either Farmers Market booklet, accompany text of natural history magazine, or be a good editorial addition to an article on motherhood and raising children in parenting newspaper.

Next example can serve as an editorial illustration for children’s periodicals or book for kids. This cute mouse is caught in action preparing for a long winter, building a nest; or hiding its home from the wild cats:

And the full realistic paintings of two Chameleons, one just a baby and another is quite sneaky an clever one, they tell their stories as well; and, certainly, would look amazing next to an article about behavior of these amazing cold-blooded reptiles:

So, to conclude, editorial illustrations of animals can certainly touch the hearts of different media readers, enhancing the text and providing educational input and humor.

Florence Watercolor Sketches – Such Young Such Different City

Italian city travel City
Visiting Florence for almost a week I had an opportunity painting there, learning its history, feeling its character; which allowed me to make a certain conclusion.
Florence is actually a young city as Italians would say. Even though the beginning of the town goes back to medieval times, majority of the city was build in 18th Century.
Florence is so different to my artist’s eye. One moment I was passing by all “framed in stone” buildings on the streets with not a hint of any greenery; and all of a sudden, I was in a gorgeous park without visible end with wild paths and fruit trees.

Above sketch was made in Boboli Gardens next to Pitti Palace. I loved painting the Fountain Island full of flowers and pots with lemon trees while hiding myself somewhere in the bushes of the huge trimmed hedge:

The other day I was stunned by the beauty of an ancient Basilica San Lorenzo. There were so many people around that it was hard to find a place to sit and look up at the gorgeous dome; but, I managed it:

The day was hot and the clouds just started forming. I wanted to show this monumental beauty, with its beige and brown of a solid stone cathedral against a gorgeous sunny sky:

In these two watercolors I pointed the difference between young greens of Boboli Gardens with their fruits and flowers of a new season in comparison with old gorgeous man made monolith that lasts centuries.

New Artworks Interior Decor

I love to see how each of my artwork, no matter of the style of the painting, starts “singing” when it is placed into an interior decor.

The abstract lines in watercolor with its vertical brushstrokes really dictated the colorful decor of that white couch.

The next, realistic seascape looks so settled an airy above the couch in the living room. I don’t think that any other interior decor is needed here as the artwork itself is pretty informative and inviting:

The next art piece is quite tasty and well suitable for a kitchen or dining room Rustic Chick decor, the painting of pears and green apples on the counter compete with each other in their realism and contrast values:

My green abstract organic lines painting below fits so well this warm interior decor of a living room:

And for the lovers of all shades of gray, the muted, almost black and white organic watercolor wash on canvas is the best suitable piece for this living room interiors:

I love how the red-ish pillow attracts attention and adds so much interest to the surrounding grays of these two artworks:

On another hand, the colorful sunny painting with flowers in the next interior decor attracts the most attention of the viewer:
