Watercolor Painting of Tulips by the artist Irina Sztukowski

With Spring is just around the corner, I remembered about this old painting of mine. Tulips are such gentle flowers; and, the variety of colors and types is just amazing! I loved painting the tiny stripes on a white lit by a morning light petals.

In preparation for a children book, I painted many illustrations with Spring Gardens. I loved using fresh watercolors with all shades of green for the sunny days illustrations. Also, pink flowers in a lot of illustrations worked so well to picture the lovely season:

And other flowers that are certainly my favorite and so greatly show the beginning of Spring, are tulips. The tulip garden I could paint many times and never would get tired:

And my favorite illustration, where the tulip garden at the back invites us to the park full of flowers, benches, and cute butterflies and squirrels:

All these illustration look very good on canvas prints for children room interior decor.

Children Book Illustration – Boy In The Garden

Bernard Goes To Music School book
In this illustration, that actually the first opening artwork in the book “Bernard Goes To Music School”  I painted the boy in front, next to the flowers. His shy nature is shown in the movement towards the flowers. He wants to smell them. Through the pink of the surrounding blooms I wanted to portray not only a beginning of a great season, but as well as the character of the protagonist.

And here is the funny note:
First, I wanted to paint a bee sitting on one of the peony flower. I almost started; but, something stopped me. I thought that the bee, as cute as it could be, will be somehow a danger to a little boy’s nose.
I am glad I prevented the “tragedy” 😉

Painting this illustration was fun and I loved later on getting through all four seasons in the illustrations of this book.

The book is now published and it is
on Amazon for little readers to explore.

Whimsical Garden Decorative Design

In my new collection Whimsical Garden, I am using some old watercolor techniques with a new approach. I decided to block the color with the help of protective medium in order to allow the watercolor to flow only in one particular area. It reminded me batik style technique but with the new trick. The possibilities of this kind of style are endless.

Here is another one for example:

I have selected the color pallet from light green to deep Paynes Gray thinking about departure of the Summer.
It was fun to imagine these designs on the stretched canvas prints with mirrored sides :

Also, this style of decorative watercolor was “screaming” to me to try it on pillows designs:

And I wouldn’t be true to myself if I have not tried to see how these designs will look in the simple off-white and black interior.
It was looking pretty good as the matter of fact:

Another design that was created in the same color theme, was the Organic Decor that has softer lines and mellow edges. I used wax application in order to achieve this effect.
Here is the end result.

Sketching California

My recent field trip to the south of San Francisco Bay Area ( 3 to 4 hours of unforgettable drive) brought a lot of good memories and some artful subjects.

Above painting is the capture of the sunset through Piedras Blancas Lighthouse silhouette. The sun was “rolling” of that big white rock down to the horizon.. the wind was crashing the waves of the shore. I admired the reds and oranges of the sunset at the Pacific ocean.

Then, going more into the land I’ve visited San Louis Obispo, a town which is famous by its Spanish Mission, which was established in 1772.

Behind the church I found a gorgeous garden that was hiding centuries old Mission Bells

watercolor sketches
If long time ago the town was a center of Christian education of that area; nowadays, San Louis Obispo is a cozy sunny place to visit the museums, walk in historical downtown, drop-in to the gift shops; and, for me of course,  a great subject for the sketches.

After a few days exploring inland, I got back to the ocean. This time it was Morro Bay, which is named after a mountain formation, the Morro Rock, that is sitting right next to the shore like a monument to fishermen life:

Founded in 1870s, Morro Bay now is a center of beach holidays; and, undoubtedly, tourism is the largest city’s industry.

Yet, it still remains a fishing port, Morro Bay has a national reservation for birds and wildlife refuge.

During this art trip I also took many photos which will definitely inspire for many paintings to come.

Watercolor Iris Garden

This 16″‘x20″ Iris Flowers painting was a pure joy to create. I received commission request from a client to paint this garden from multiple photographs. Her husband grows gorgeous iris flowers of many kinds in his garden. My client wanted to place some of them into one painting.

First, I have created a few sketches:

After the composition and sketches were approved, I started painting:
I have used wet-on-wet technique for the background wash, yet leaving the leaves of the iris flowers untouched. Later I painted them, one at the time, to give them more definition.

Painting flowers was truly fun. I had to incorporate the photo-references of blue iris, purple iris, and yellow iris flowers into one little garden that fits 16″x20″ window of the Arches Cold pressed watercolor paper.

I also documented stages of the painting and later on created a mini movie with step-by-step creation of these Iris Flowers Garden:

My client was very happy with the results; and, she loved the original painting when it finally arrived in the mail.
But, as I usually like a little more than just one painting creation, I’ve also created a few designs with these Iris Flowers for Thank-You Cards, Birthday Cards and just Notecards with these sweet little flowers.
My Cards Gallery is now in full bloom with these and other iris flowers.

Park Strolling watercolor
My latest inspiration is in this watercolor landscape Strolling In The Garden.
I looked through the window of my studio and observed the street, a grapefruit tree, plants and flowers lit by the morning Sun. An artist imagination did not wait long to create this simple, yet romantic scene.
In the best traditions of impressionists and applying some realistic technique, I painted partially from my imagination and partially from what I have seen in front of me; a fresh full of sunlight landscape, a trouble-free summer story.

The young woman walking with umbrella is strolling away from the viewer. She might have a book in her hands; and, soon, she will rest and read her novel enjoying a nice warm day.. Or maybe, her thoughts are drifting far far away. The Sun, the light, and a nice walk with umbrella; a private moment in a beautiful park… I was there, in my imagination; and, I painted it..

Still life garden fruit
Introducing a Garden Apple, the one that didn’t come from the grocery store!

I love freshly picked apples for their gentle highlights, for almost fuzzy glowing from inside skin. Unlike the store-bought apples with the layer of wax and days on the shelf, the garden fruits seem to be more happy..

This apple surely was a happy camper. The leaves on the branch were like spreading hands..and the fruit was smiling:
“Eat me! Oh, no, wait, paint me first!”

Pink Rose Buds

This little pink Lady named Rose was blooming in my garden a couple of month ago.. The morning Sun just hit the petals, and the background was still dark from the shadow of the fence.

The challenge in this Pink Rose painting was that I wanted to leave the geranium on the background but keep it very vague, not popping-up so to speak. Instead, I wanted to make my Pink Rose shine. Any professional artist will tell you that if you want to have something on the back ground make it cooler than the front; and, vise versa: make the foreground warm to pop-up.

In this painting of the Pink (almost purple) rose everything is opposite to the usual rules: the rose color is cooler than the background colors.

How did I achieve the contrast? I’ve loaded my brush with very juicy red. After masking the rose drawing, I’ve applied wet on wet technique, in several layers, until I was satisfied with the deepness of the red geranium. Then, I’ve painted the rose in a very light washes, ending the session with almost dry-on-dry application.

White Oleander Painting

Watercolor art
Do you see white flowers?
Aha, it is a White Oleander, the one that is growing down my street.

This yet poisonous (see the story here ) but such beautiful bush amazes me each time when I take a walk in the neighborhood.

And now I’ll explain why I asked about white:

I painted these Oleander flowers without using any white color, and on a top of it there is not even a  spec of white paper left on the painting. Before I began to paint, I made a good “rainbow-ie” wash on the paper. Then I dried it nicely, reserved the space for the middle of the flowers and started playing with one wash after another on the flowers’ surface.

Yet the real magic began when I worked on the background. The so-rather-not-white flowers all of a sudden became united and quiet white against the dark of the background colors.

I love that kind of magic!!
