Ranunculus Painting – Phase II

At  the Phase II for the Ranunculus painting I made a wash for the background and started on the tablecloth pattern, trying to place it in the perspective and keep it simple as intended. The challenge with the background is that until the flowers are worked on the pale green does not look appealing to me as I usually  choose the darker background when flowers are light. But we will see.

Pale green suggestion for the background

Magazine cut-out suggestion

Working on the commission piece is not easy, but still enjoyable task. It gives the Artist space to create and propose, yet still keeps on the toes to meet the client’s needs. My client wanted an imaginary bouquet of Ranunculus flowers in the transparent glass vase. I was given the small cut out from Martha Stewart catalog to follow the color pattern, the tablecloth style, and the type of Ranunculus (as we now know there are more than 600 species in the World ). I also was told that the style of my Tea Roses paining and Roses in The Glass Vase painting would be the best when I decide on composition. And the background should be pale green not dark.

First I decided on composition. As there will be lots of flowers and petals, I will do a very simple almost central composition. The Flower Symphony will speak for itself. Between tablecloth and Ranunculus flowers in the vase there should not be a competition; therefore, I will make a tablecloth flowers very simple and will try my best to work on realistic painting for Ranunculus.

Ranunculus Study

An incoming commission, in which I will paint Ranunculus bouquet, gave me an opportunity to research, sketch and learn more about these special and very beautiful flowers. The name Ranunculus actually came from Latin for “little frog”. These flowers prefer lots of water and are found near lakes, ponds; just like frogs. Another name for Ranunculus is Buttercup. There are about 600 species of these flowers are found in the world so far. I’ve also learned that these cute flowers are long lasting cut flowers in the bouquet. But not all beauty is safe. It appears that fresh buttercups are actually poisonous, yet when dry they are absolutely safe. Some of Ranunculus flowers have numerous petals and others none. I personally love the ones that look like roses, peonies or poppies. Although, takes quite a bit to paint petal after petal..

In this post I wanted to tell where my art collectors get the cards with the images of the art works. I use Fine Art America that allows not only purchase prints, canvases, acrylic style decor but also order a variety of cards. Hot items now with Easter and Mother’s Day around the corner! On a top of everything Fine Art America even provided me with my own website. One of my client was wondering if these guys are reliable to order from. My answer was: absolutely YES! The quality is amazing, the shipping is super fast and if you order more than one card it comes in a cute box. I used their service myself not once already by ordering couple of my prints/cards for the friends and cards from my sister’s website and I was amazed by the quality and professional services. And what I like when ordering cards is that no matter what size is the original painting was it fits the standard card form; and, can make if not unique then almost unique small gift for somebody :0)

This cute guy lives in our Cul-de-sac. He has quite a few brothers in the house. One day when I prepared the sketchbook photo references he was out and he was my first model that morning. I promised myself that I’ve paint full size painting one day. And here we go few month later the dream came true. You can see sketch 6×4 on the bottom and 8″x10″ painting that I’ve finished today. The challenge was (as it is probably for a lot of artists) to paint dogs hair. The teeny tiny ones that were covering his eyes, but that I really wanted to paint in order to keep the character in place.

Tulips on Fire

Florals, flower painting, green, original art, pink, red, tulip, tulips, yellow

One of the best and the most amazing things for the Artist is when he/she can share the art with other people. And it is always great when people admire your art, and when people want your art – is the most grateful moments. Although, for me personally it is hard sometimes to detach from my paintings. That’s probably why I sell more prints than paintings ;)… Original paintings are like babies. But hey, children suppose to grow up and eventually they will make outside the nest.
Today one of my favorite customers sent me an e-mail with the subject: ” I have to have it!” She chose this painting of tulips. When I painted this one I really wanted to show the sun showing through the petals penetrating them through red making it pink. The game of three colors (red, pink, and yellow) reminded me of a fire. And I called this painting “Tulips on Fire”. I am glad that now these tulips will sparkle in someones’ house 🙂
