Painting half orange
Watercolor Painting of Cut Orange by the artist Irina Sztukowski

 Original was SOLD
Prints are available HERE

When I painted these oranges my biggest challenge was those little veins and the highlights on the cut. The main idea was to make everything without a drop of white paint; just by leaving white of the paper.
My favorite part was the orange flower in the corner. I really wanted it to glow and give a good contrast to the orange color.

In the process of cleaning up my studio I found these two small 8×10 inch still life paintings that I brought from Russia when coming to study in America more that 10 years ago. I came here with a small suitcase. My luggage contained two sets of clothes, a spoon, a knife, a cup, a fork; and a few watercolor paintings that for some reason I decided to bring with me. I guess once the Artist is always the Artist, no matter what country we go the most important Treasure is our art.
Ten years plus past and now my art contains more than 200 pieces (considering that I am actively painting only for the last two years). Thank God major part of the artworks found their new homes and some are going to be exhibited. But still, my studio grew up tremendously: brushes, paper, books, other supplies. It took me a week to pack stuff and bring upstairs to clean up the studio for the remodeling. Thank God to my Husband, Son, and Father-In-Law do all the “dirty” work. My job during the remodeling is mainly cooking, supervising, and watching that our two cute puppies don’t get into a trouble.
That is how my studio looked before:
That is how my studio looks now:
And that how one of our bedrooms looks
(not even mentioning the living room that temporarily became my “new” studio and a storage for the furniture) :

The hazy cool morning in Alameda Crab Cove grew later into a lovely sunny day; but in my painting I wanted to pick up the beginning of the day when the bird is thinking of its breakfast, the tide is getting lower, and the wind surfers on the background just started setting up their sails for an active weekend fun.

And here the report from my fellow artists and their arts. It was great to be with the group of them to discuss our art works, laugh, share, and inspire each other:

Small Art From Heart Expo

Last night I
was contacted by Small Art From Heart exhibition coordinator and got
invited to participate. This exhibition is featuring the artists from around 40
different countries and will be hosted in Newaygo, Michigan in August –
September of this year (www.SAFTH.com). The artists are given the opportunity
to present their small art pieces, ACEO paintings. I chose three originals from
my miniatures collection.  What I liked
the most researching the website and the Exhibit statement that it oriented to
small school children who will be exposed to the art, get inspired, and try to
make their own. Therefore, with my absolute pleasure, I am placing my three
artworks for a donation to benefit a children’s charity. It always feels good
to apply your talent for a good cause.

Girl’s Portrait Study Phase I

buy art, commission, commission art, family painting, girl portrait, Irina, kids portraits, order commission, Sztukowski, Uncategorized

I have not painted kids on the large format paper. This is my first try on 18″x24″. I’ve met the girl this Fall at one party. The sun was shining just right and the parents were so kind to let me taking my future photo-reference that I’ve jumped to the opportunity. The girls personality is just amazing. Like a lot of Red Heads she was shining from inside. Shy at the beginning, she revealed her smart and talkative nature after the first half an hour of the party; and, became the main subject of admiration. The same moment when I took her photo she was sitting herself comfortably in the huge chair and all of a sudden she heard the dogs barking nearby; she was not scared, no, instead she was curious if this dog can jump over the fence that she can see it. What a Cutie!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
After the drawing I’ve started the painting by covering the main area of the portrait with Masking Fluid around the edges and the middle of the portrait with the cut out paper. I’ve started the painting with the wash of yellow and alizarin crimson slowly moving to a darker (ultramarine blue and violet) colors. The reason I’ve chosen these colors for the background is that the girl has rainbow-flowery dress and I thought it would be nice to include the colors of her dress into the background wash.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
The composition that I’ve chosen is also very unusual for me. The girls portrait is moved to the far right when I left almost a half of the painting for a background. I’ve done it intentionally to emphasize the feeling of sun and wind and make the viewer wonder what is there? what this girl sees? I believe this composition gives more space for imagination.

painting of a pear
Watercolor Food – Painting of a Pear – Artist Illustrator Irina Sztukowski

This Painting Print Is Available
Don’t you think that each pear is different and each of them has its own personality? When you look at the pear you would never say Mister, right? People refer to these fruits as Ladies all the time. Even woman shape is called a Pear Shape one. In fact, in Russian language pears carry a feminine name.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
When I looked at this Miss Green Beauty I’ve noticed the obvious nudity. She was shy but proud of her curves. It was impossible not to paint her.
I’ve challenged myself using a watercolor board again. Lots of water, lots of dabbing, but the needed effect was reached; and, I am happy about it. The advantage of the board is that you can place it on a wall or on easel without framing. The board is 2-3 mm thick, which gives the painting durability and decorative feeling. Also, the rough surface of the board brings some interesting character to the painting texture.

And here is the small tour into the Pear History:
Pears are one of the world’s oldest cultivated and beloved fruits. In 5,000 B.C., Feng Li, a Chinese diplomat, abandoned his responsibilities when he became consumed by grafting peaches, almonds, persimmons, pears and apples as a commercial venture. In The Odyssey, the Greek poet laureate Homer lauds pears as a “gift of the gods.” Pomona, goddess of fruit, was a cherished member of the Roman Pantheon and Roman farmers documented extensive pear growing and grafting techniques. Thanks to their versatility and long storage life, pears were a valuable and much-desired commodity among the trading routes of the ancient world. Evident in the works of Renaissance Masters, pears have long been an elegant still-life muse for artists. In the 17th century a great flourishing of modern pear variety cultivation began taking place in Europe. And in popular culture, the pear tree was immortalized alongside a partridge in the 18th-century Christmas carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Early colonists brought the first pear trees to America’s eastern settlements where they thrived until crop blights proved too severe to sustain widespread cultivation. Fortunately, the pear trees brought west to Oregon and Washington by pioneers in the 1800’s thrived in the unique agricultural conditions found in the Pacific Northwest. Today’s Northwest pear varieties are the same or similar to those first cultivated in France and Belgium where they were prized for their delicate flavor, buttery texture, and long storage life. Amazing Discovery

buy art, buy original, buy print, how to paint, Irina, Painting, paintings, Sztukowski, Watercolor, watercolors, watercolour
Amazing discovery for me of course. I was uploading my recent watercolor miniatures to one of the Artists’ web site ( I have gallery on www.IrinaSztukowski.NoBullART.com great site by the way, and free for artists, check it out)
And I just realized that I’ve made more than 25 miniatures for the last couple of months. Not a big deal for someone maybe, but a good one for me.
But the greatest discovery was that I all of a sudden understood that I live MY life. You know how it usually goes, you think that this is just a day, the life is somewhere there. It is hard to be in the moment. So last night I was in that MOMENT. What a great discovery 🙂 !!!

Butterfly Watercolor Painting

It was only a few seconds that this butterfly allowed me to take pictures; and it was only twenty minutes that I allowed myself to paint it today.
This happy butterfly lives in glass dome of Academy of Science Museum in San Francisco. I find that painting butterflies gives these beauties a second lives as we all know they don’t live long.
The challenge for me was to paint background (wet on dry) using not too much wetness in order to continue the flower and the butterfly itself with minimal bleeding. After I was done with the first washes I happily realized that there are only 10 minutes passed. So I had whole 10 more minutes to focus on the details of that little creature.

An Egg Watercolor Painting

buy art, buy original, buy print, egg, how to paint, Irina, Painting, paintings, realism, realistic, Sztukowski, Watercolor, watercolors, watercolour

SOLDI have made this painting a couple years ago. My friend was telling me about her experience of painting an egg in one of San Francisco State College art classes. She said her teacher was so precise and so critical about eggs painting that she was sweating very much on her painting. We decided to try painting an egg right away and half hour later there are two beautiful eggs were born. Today I looked at this painting and thought: How could I make it? there is not even direct light from one spot! I guess it was just inspiration. Ah, and the paper is under the egg is the piece from the grocery store bag..One day I should try it again!
