Find A Cat in Benicia – Plein-Air Painting Session

building mountains shore watercolor
Benicia is a small town in Northern California. It is only 15 minutes from where I leave. Cozy streets with restaurants, gift shops, and a beautiful San Francisco Bay shore attract a lot of artists. CWA plein-air artists group had the same idea: to come, to see, to paint.
We made an attempt to come here last year, but October rain chased us away. This year the weather couldn’t be better.
I was sitting on the shore and panting a visitors center with its palm trees. The building covered pretty much all the bay beauty; but you can still see Mountain Diablo, sparkles on a water, and even a fisherman in his little boat.

If you look closely, you also will find a few birds and….a….. cat! I am not telling you where it is. You will need to look for it :0)

A little bit of Benicia’s history:
In spite of the fact that now it is a tiny little town, back in 19th century, for more than a year, Benicia was serving as California Capital in 1853.
In 1860 there was an area dedicated to US Army Arsenal, an armory place. Historical building are still bringing joy to the visitors: The Clock Tower, The Camel Barn (yes, yes, they used to have stables with camels for transportation).
Being a major connector in transportation business back in 1860s, now Benicia is a quiet lovely place to visit for  fun and for arts. It has regular art exhibitions and art openings in its Galleries, promotes arts through Open Studio events, provides many art classes for children and adults. And needless to say, it is a great place to visit for a plein-air painting session.

All artists from CWA had fun painting different places in Benicia that day:

While ago I published a post She Sells Sea Shells… And today one more sea shell is created and gone. I talked about symbolism of the sea shells and pearls before. I just wanted to say, that it appears my customers love this subject very much, and I believe it is due to a symbol of eternity and love besides the wealth and beauty :0)
And here are the other shells that recently found their homes:

Classroom – Watercolor Collage

abstract, art that sells, artist, bestselling artist, class, classroom, collage, create, creative, idea, light bulb, Sztukowski, Uncategorized

I gave this collage quite a long name: “When Heart is in
Watercolors Bright Ideas Will Come”. Long but so simple and so self-explanatory.
This collage was born in my Art 106 Drawing & Composition class that I am
taking this semester. The assignment was to show a class room using one-point
perspective and based on our real facility. We could also add either personal
meaning or pursue some theme. Materials are glue, paper, magazine cut-outs or
whatever we could find and apply.
My idea did not wait too long to be born. And as I used to
have a watercolor class in the same room, and I am now a proudly devoted
watercolor artist, I have decided to organize my “Classroom” placing my
watercolor art on the walls and making all students look like me. Basically, it
is me in the different stages of the art process. And yes, when I create I have
that “light” glowing in my mind. Yet when I am tired (you see the girl at the
far left desk?) the ideas are “turned off”. I cut my art for walls, the still
life, and the little hearts from my old postcards and calendars. And the Blick
art supply magazine helped me to make the space look more like a classroom or studio.
The lights for the lightbolbs came from Michael’s cute cards supply shelves.
While cutting the postcards with my watercolor, I had
another bright idea. There are a lot of sketch-like, palette pieces, and drafts
watercolor around my studio. I could definitely use them one day to create some
decorative art pieces and give them a new life.
Studying about collages in my art history class last
semester I’ve learned that collage art was basically initiated by Picasso and
his artist friend…. They looked for a different materials for their art and
started combining their found objects on one flat space, would it be a piece of
cardboard or wood. Collage in its Nature is brining various materials in one
organized space and giving them sometimes totally new meaning… Courtesy to WiKi

The term collage derives from the French “coller”
meaning “
glue”. This term was coined by both Georges
Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th century
when collage became a distinctive part of modern art.

A Birthday Rose

art that sells, bestseller, bestselling artist, flower, pink rose, rose painting, Still Life, Uncategorized, Watercolor, watercolor by Irina, watercolours
This is my Birthday Weekend and I gave myself a little gift of getting on my blog and writing a short post. And of course the flower is the best object for that kind of occasion, isn’t it.

This semester in school has been tough: managing equivalent of 17 units and working part time was a good challenge yet did not stop me to paint. This simple still-life has almost no background, which allows for the Rose “to speak”. The light from the left illuminated the petals making the Pink of the Rose more interesting and diverse. The dark Green of the leaves helps to the Red to pop and brings the flower top towards the front of the painting.
