Busy Berry Season & Digital Bugs

I got overwhelmed with a new style these days. I am playing with digital art images in Adobe Illustrator. My digital art so far looks pretty much as my watercolors. And of course, the first subjects that I was playing with, were berries.

I first made digital Strawberries:
Then I created Raspberries:
And then, I thought about exotic berry that is called Acerola:
It was fun to add digital colors into my new creations.
They do look like my watercolors that I’d paint by hand thought.

And, in reality, there is no digital art ever existed that would be without an artist’s creative touch.

My other super digital art started for example with drawing (by hand of course) funny looking bugs. Then I applied a few filters in Adobe Illustrator, and filled with digital color.

Here is the example:

These cute bugs are just asking to jump into some children book.

Nine Shades Of Blueberries Yogurt Labels

I am happy to introduce a new exciting project that I am making for one developing company in Ireland. The company requested black and white images of blueberries for their yogurt lids.

The interesting part for me as an artist, was that the original panting needed to be only in black ink. Quite a new concept for me; but, still very interesting.

Blueberries Ink Drawing

When I was done with painting of the image, I placed it on different shades of blue from Sky Blue to almost purple Ultramarine Blue; and, that’s how those black and white blueberries got their Nine Shades Of Blue

My art collectors can order now not only these images on canvas, but as well on Pillows for Kitchen, or on Farmers Market Tote Bags :

The history of the blueberries images goes back two or three years, when my first blueberry watercolor painting was created for a dear client for the Jam Labels project. I love this painting so much that I share it everywhere 🙂

These lovely blueberries were definitely the ones that inspired me for the future yogurt labels project!

Blackcurrant Redcurrant – My Current Jam Labels

jam labels project
Painting blackcurrant and redcurrant was fun. Those closely related berries brought some challenge for me as an artist. I had to juggle between botanical approach (e.g. realistic painting) yet still keep in mind that those tiny berries will be even tinier on the jam labels. So, in spite of my love to realism in watercolor, I had to simplify a little.
I still wanted some details on the blackcurrant and redcurrant berries, so I painted them doubling the real size on paper. And when I painted, I had to step aside quite a bit in order to see the “whole picture” and not to get lost in the berry maze.

It is interesting to note that when I painted blackcurrant, I had to apply red (Alizarin Crimson) as the first wash, in order for the black to have rather warm tint.
On another hand, when painting redcurrant, I used black and purple while red was still wet. That helped me to indicate transparency of the redcurrant berries, kind of see-through berry seeds feeling:

The jam labels project continues. I am not only eating lots of good fruits and berries, but definitely “killing” many birds with one stone: researching botanical structure of the fruits and berries, having good time painting with watercolors, and accomplishing a big important project.

When I was painting Raspberries for the Jam Labels Project I was remembering my Grandma’s garden, where those sweet berries were growing almost like in a wild jungle high enough for me and my baby-sister to get lost there. What could be better than to going to the Raspberry “forest” in a warm Summer morning and picking up a fuzzy, warm, glowing from inside berry!
Later on, we would help Grandma to collect a cup or two of these berries for her kitchen magic cooking. My Grandma made yummy jams ( in Russian its called “Vareniie”) out of them; and we usually had it at winter time remembering the good Summer days.
