The last workshop in the local library for this season was devoted to Wizard Of Oz book and movie. It was hard to separate the written story from the video version of it. For example, Dorothy had Silver Slippers in the book and Ruby Slippers in the movie. Scarecrow received a Diploma from Wizard of Oz;  but in the book he actually received a bag of bran with pins and needles. And Cowardly Lion got a potion of Courage in the book while in the movie he got a medal.
I taught kids about a Still Life by cutting a few objects from the Wizard Of Oz story and combining them into a visual still life:
Then I painted the actual still life on a paper, and  put it together:
We also had some “guests” who was watching us painting: my friend landed us a Wizard of Oz Barbie Doll collection:
Kids and I had a blast. We not only painted this time, we learned how to draw, how to place the images on a paper, make some important decisions on composition. The paintings turned out bright and creative:
Even Moms this time wanted to paint; and, I have to honestly tell you they did good and I saw they enjoyed every second of it :0)

In preparation for a children book, I painted many illustrations with Spring Gardens. I loved using fresh watercolors with all shades of green for the sunny days illustrations. Also, pink flowers in a lot of illustrations worked so well to picture the lovely season:

And other flowers that are certainly my favorite and so greatly show the beginning of Spring, are tulips. The tulip garden I could paint many times and never would get tired:

And my favorite illustration, where the tulip garden at the back invites us to the park full of flowers, benches, and cute butterflies and squirrels:

Bernard Goes To Music School – Children Book Illustration

art for kids Bernard Goes To Music School
A little boy Bernard goes to music school. In these three illustrations I wanted to show the action combining the story of the book with the colorful season, Fall, in this children book.

I painted the boy anxiously anticipating the first lesson and looking through the window while riding a bus.

He gets on the bus with his dad:

 He ride the train:

And all three illustrations above needed to be placed on one page per author’s request. I drew a rainbow and two birds uniting these mini illustrations in one artwork:

Time For Work – Time For Walk

Bernard Goes To Music School children book illustration
In one of these two illustrations that I painted for the book “Bernard Goes To Music School” , I pictured the boy on his walk along the creek. He is curiously watching salmon swimming down the stream. The Fall season is indicated by colors in the trees on the apposite embankment and leaves on the ground. Fall has just started. Little boy loves to explore the Nature. He loves his walk!

But he also helps his parents in the garden. He is a hard worker. In the next illustration, I painted a garden filled with blooming flowers. The house is in the back lit by the morning sun. The boy has just watched his parents working in the garden, and now he is helping them by pulling this huge pipe, arranging the landscape. And, I placed a porcelain decorative Mr Frog right next to the boy as if he helps him too 🙂

Paining children book illustrations is fun, and it is a process that needs to be well organized. The artist should not overlook any elements. They are all helping kids to explore the illustration later on, when parents are reading the specific page. The composition of the paintings would help the exploration flow.

In these two illustrations I tried to play with diagonal composition (The Salmon Creek) where the painting’s energy is “moving” with the stream. And, in “Working Boy” I “locked” the composition on the boy with the pipe by placing tulip flowers on the left of the illustration and the frog to the right of it.

I See Squirrel – Children Book Illustration

art for kids, Bernard Goes To Music School, boy, Butterfly, children book illustration, Connie Du, illustration, Irina Sztukowski, Painting, road, Squirrel
Bernard Goes To Music School by Connie Du
Link to the illustration is HERE
In this illustration from the book Bernard Goes To Music School, I pictured the boy happily walking down the street and enjoying warm summer weather. The trees and bushes are in bloom indicating early Summer. The birds are in the sky. Way up on the tall tree branch I placed a squirrel eating the nut. Boy just saw the squirrel. But he is still here up to a big surprise: a little bunny is hiding under the bush. And how about a colorful butterfly?! In just a second it will take off and bring so much joy to the boy.

All these elements of the illustration, including the road that vanishes in the atmospheric perspective, were composed the way that children, when they see the page and while parent is reading the text from the book Bernard Goes To Music School, kids will first see the boy, then their eyes will try to find a squirrel and of course they will discover bunny and the butterfly in a very short time. Yet after that they again will focus on the boy, the main character of the page and the book.

The illustration was painted, of course in correlation with the text on the page. The whole story is in the book on Amazon.com ( HERE ).

interior design for kids
When looking at my new creations for Baby Room Gallery, I caught myself thinking “Gosh, it seems that I practically create for a Baby Girl only!”.. Even baby blue Flower Cloud series seem to be screaming Girl! Girl! Girl!
art for kids
I had to admit, yes, out of more than 100 paintings and designs in Baby Room Gallery, there are probably at least 75% artworks that can be used for a baby girl room decor:

Well, I just couldn’t stop creating floral designs. The flowers, either on baby pink or baby blue seem to be so gentle, so appropriate for a baby room decoration:

Then, there are not only flowers there, in the gallery. I also have a series with Winnie The Pooh that definitely was created to boys and girls. Actually, Winnie looks to me more suited for boys as he seemed to get into a lot of troubles by trying to eat that honey:

Another series of paintings about Peter Rabbit was my fantasy on what would that silly boy dream about after his mom sent him to bed without dinner for his behavior at Mr McGregors’ garden.
It seems to me that these three paintings can definitely be applied to some silly boys in some houses:

Ok, looking at the Baby Room Gallery with the critical eye, I confess; there are many artworks for girls. But, the boys were not left behind; they also have something to learn from 🙂

………………………………..
The work week was quite busy for me. Between the preparation for Tao House Art Show, attending CWA meeting and working in a Concord Gallery I also had a workshop in Martinez Library on Tuesday.
This time I taught kids how to apply watercolor wet-on-wet (we played with the Winnie’s head for that), dry-on-dry ( his honey pot and a tree were just asking be painted that way), and we even learned what is the difference to paint free-hand vs following the given lines.
It is amazing how the kids can absorb the information. Quick and easy! One little boy loved wet-on-wet technique so much that he painted entire second piece of art all over using not only all area of the painting but also mixing all available colors from his palette.
Fun! Fun! Fun!

These two additions to my Nursery Series are going to be hung in one boys room. The baby is due in October, but his parents are already decorating his room. Mom and Dad have two cute little dogs: a boy and a girl. Mom works as a paramedic and a future Dad is a firefighter. I thought it would be great to dress one of the dog as a Dogtor, and another as a FireDog.. A little boy will learn from his first days of his life about such needed and important professions :0)
